Planning For A Winter Engagement Photoshoot

The holidays are here at last, and it’s engagement season! In fact, did you know that 40% of engagements typically happen between Christmas and Valentine’s Day?!

If you’re one of the lucky couples to pop the question this time of year: congratulations! I’m sure you’re ready to shout your love from the rooftops as soon as possible, and that means sending wedding announcements…but how do you prepare for winter engagement photos?

One of my favorite parts of my work is getting to showcase the unique love between couples, and as a Richmond local, I have a few tips to help keep you comfortable and achieve those beautiful engagement shots you’re looking for!

Pick the Right Location

With the potential for temperamental weather, picking the right location can be very important! For example, if you are looking for beautiful photos in a remote area, then you may have to face the possibility of rescheduling if a storm rolls in. But if you’re looking for images around town and in well-manicured areas, planning is somewhat less strenuous!

Dress For The Weather

That weather I mentioned? It can definitely affect your photos! Tasteful layers are the key to the perfect wintery photoshoot! With the right choices, you can avoid having to choose between being tightly bundled in your heavy winter coats or freezing to get the ideal winter wonderland image. Plus, cozy sweaters, flannel, and warm hugs make for wonderfully romantic images!

Plan for the Lighting

Natural light can be tricky to capture in the winter since daylight hours are shortened. That makes planning and scheduling so much more important than any other time of year; sometimes even a few minutes can lead to a negative shift in lighting, and you’ll miss that much-needed afternoon glow. Plan for the right time of day to capture your photos, and make sure to be on time or early to the location to ensure just the right lighting!

Don’t Stress!
