It’s hard to believe that the dog days of summer will soon give way to crisp autumn days, crunchy leaves, all things pumpkin, and back to school season. But for now, I’m reveling in all things summer, including an abundance of opportunities to photograph large family portrait sessions. This Holyers family portrait session is particularly dear to my heart. They had their hearts set on gathering their extended family together to enjoy a memorable afternoon in front of my camera.
The Joy in Large Family Portrait Sessions
I truly love large family portrait sessions. It’s amazing to observe how everyone interacts with each other, to see the bonds forged between generations. Grandparents and grandchildren, cousins, siblings, all coming together to focus on the people who they love (and who love them) the most in the world.
A Large Family Portrait Sessions with Kids
While I love photographing grown-ups, I must say that the kids truly steal the show in most family portrait sessions. Kids don’t take themselves too seriously. They just have this amazing ability to relax in front of the camera and be themselves unabashedly. The silly faces, the toothy grins, sweet hand-holding and wet kisses – as a parent or grandparent or aunt or uncle, those are the moments we cherish the most, the moments we want photographed so we can hold them in our memory forever.
Breaking Into Small Family Groups
Another great thing about large family portrait sessions is that they provide an opportunity to break into smaller family units to capture intimate moments between family members.

No Matter What Season of Life You’re In, Family Portraits Are About Memorializing Your Love
Think back over your lifetime and look forward to your future. How many opportunities have you had to take photos with ALL of your cousins? When was the last time you were able to take a photo with all of your adult siblings? As an adult, when did you last have professional portraits taken with your parents? If you’re a parent, wouldn’t you want photos of your adult children? Your grandchildren? At the end of the day, no matter what season of life you’re in, you won’t regret capturing these precious moments in professional family portraits.
