How To Prepare For Your Professional Headshots

“A picture is worth a thousand words.”

As a branding and portrait photographer, I can appreciate the full impact of this statement. When preparing for your professional headshots, you aren’t just planning photographs to be keepsakes for loved ones; you’re doing the background work for a valuable marketing tool!

So, how do you prepare for your headshot session with EmmiClaire Photography?

Schedule Your Session Conscientiously

When planning your headshot session, you want to make sure that you budget a generous amount of time into your schedule. The last thing you want to do is to schedule yourself on any kind of time crunch that could carry anxiety into your photos!

Rather than planning your session for your lunch break or leading up/following a big meeting, choose a time with less adrenaline in your system like your day off or a half-day in the office.

Choose The Right Attire

Picking the perfect outfit for your business headshots is very important! You want to choose clothes and accessories that are flattering, but appropriate to fit the brand. Avoid bold prints or anything that could distract from the subject: you!

Spend time carefully curating your look, down to the right accessories to accent your appearance but not overwhelm it. The contrast of dark tones and bright hues is a great way to show off personality and add interest to your headshots. This article can help you choose the perfect pieces for your ensemble, or you can download my own free styling guide below!

Plan For Your Hair & Makeup

With your headshots being such important photos, and the subject of the images being your face, it is especially important to pay attention to hair and makeup choices for your session! If going the DIY route, be sure to give yourself plenty of time to craft the perfect look and/or refresh it before your photo session.

Since headshots are such an important investment for your business, I highly recommend getting your hair and makeup professionally done for the session; this helps to boost your confidence and is one less thing for you to worry about. I do work closely with a local stylist; contact me today for a referral!

Think About Your Branding

How do you want your brand to be represented? This can dictate a few different things for your shoot! You can add subtle nods to your business in your color and accessory choices. Choosing what style of attire (formal, business casual, etc.) can indicate your profession as well as your accessibility.

Another valuable marketing tool? Your facial expression in your photos! Emotions have a large impact on marketing; emotional appeal can subconsciously influence what we buy, what actions we take, and which brands we choose. When preparing for your photos, think about your business. What is your brand’s message? What mood do you want to convey to your audience? This can help you choose a facial expression for your final headshots!
